Ethan Tam and the project leads for this semester will join us in a conversation about nonprofit sourcing, current and past projects, and structure open development workflows across student teams.

The Bay Area Open Science Group is a growing community for Bay Area academics and researchers interested in incorporating open science into their research, teaching, and learning. Targeting students, faculty, and staff at UCSF, Berkeley, and Stanford, the goal of the community is to increase awareness of and engagement with all things open science, including open access articles, open research data, open source software, and open educational resources. Through this work the group hopes to connect researchers with tools they can use to make the products and process of science more equitable and reproducible. UCSF welcomes all participants to our events. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this event because of a disability, please contact Ariel Deardorff at ariel.deardorff@ucsf.edu as soon as possible.

In this session, the fourth in the Library's AI in Your Toolkit series, we will present strategies and tools for effectively using AI as a tutor. We envision the session as being useful for students, staff, and faculty who want to use AI as a tool for enhancing their understanding of topics that are relevant to their training or work. The session will include several hands-on components, allowing attendees an opportunity to actively practice crafting effective prompts in a variety of tools. We will cover chatbot tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini, as well as NotebookLM, a powerful tool that can be used to generate learning material.

Learning Objectives

Decide whether AI may be useful for enhancing your understanding of a topic, or how it may be used to complement other resources.Create effective chatbot prompts to enhance your understanding of a topic.Evaluate whether information offered by AI tools is trustworthy.Accessibility

In this session, part of the Library's AI in Your Toolkit series, we will present prominent examples of AI bias, explain why bias occurs, and summarize efforts by AI engineers to curb bias. We will also outline some strategies that AI users can take to minimize biased output. Finally, we will open the floor to participants to offer reactions to several guided questions. We expect to have a lively discussion, but encourage you to attend the session even if you do not intend to participate in the question-and-answer section.

Join us for a story-centered workshop exploring how personal narratives can challenge stigma and cultivate connection around dementia-related diagnoses. Drawing inspiration from the HIV/AIDS Epidemic Collection at the UCSF Library, the session examines storytelling practices that emerged at a pivotal moment in public health advocacy—when firsthand testimony, collective voice, and acts of witnessing became vital tools for both care and change.

Led by documentary filmmaker and UCSF Artist in Residence Michelle Memran, the workshop invites participants to consider how language shapes lived experience, how stigma reverberates through individuals and families, and what it means to advocate for ourselves and others facing often misunderstood, multifaceted illnesses. Through guided reflection and creative storytelling exercises, participants will reflect on how telling a story—our own or a loved one’s—can connect us and expand our shared understanding.

Together, this workshop will explore how to move from isolated experiences toward a shared “we,” and how reclaiming narrative agency can reshape our understanding of dementia and catalyze a much-needed care revolution.

Register via the UCSF Library events calendar to save your spot. Registration is required and is open to UCSF ID badge holders.

UCSF welcomes everyone, including people with disabilities to our events. To request a reasonable accommodation for this event, please contact Dylan Romero by emailing dylan.romero@ucsf.edu.
