She is developing one of the most robust pediatric acupuncture hospital programs in the country and currently serves as lead clinician for a 3-year, $3 million PCORI study assessing the efficacy of acupressure to relieve symptoms associated with cancer treatment—the largest traditional Chinese medicine pediatric oncology study ever conducted.

Dr. Adcock has helped develop several Chinese medicine and acupuncture programs at UCSF, including an internationally-recognized staff support program that provided 4,000 acupuncture treatments for 1,200 hospital staff members and a series of self-care Qigong classes. She also serves as Executive Director of the California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA), having previously served on their Board of Directors from 2014-2016. Additionally, she works as a professor for doctoral programs and medical schools and consults for integrative medical programs at hospitals and major medical centers.

Jenifer Matthews, MD, is the Associate Director of Education at the UCSF Osher Center and sees patients at Children's Hospital Oakland. With expertise in integrative medicine, she takes a holistic approach to patient care using modalities such as mind-body medicine, dietary supplements, and pediatric acupuncture, alongside traditional medications. Dr. Matthews has a special interest in caring for children and teens who need support to cope with anxiety, depression, or chronic pain. Her research focuses on implementing pediatric acupuncture and integrative medicine in caring for children who are underserved by traditional and complementary medical systems.

Dr. Matthews is deeply involved in medical education and structural competency training, including teaching and curriculum development. She currently teaches in various Osher Center programs, including the Integrative Health Equity and Applied Research predoctoral fellowship program and the Osher Collaborative Faculty Fellowship. She is an active member of Integrative Medicine for the Underserved, through which she advances integrative health equity and improves access to integrative health services for all children. Dr. Matthews earned her medical degree at UC Davis School of Medicine, completed her pediatrics residency at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, and completed the Integrative Medicine Scholars Program at the UCSF Osher Center.

Learning Objectives

Analyze patterns of patient-driven herbal use and identify gaps in contemporary clinical practice. Compare national and international models of herbal medicine integration within academic medical centers and evaluate their applicability to institutional implementation strategies.Examine interprofessional approaches to herbal medicine integration and assess their role in ensuring safety, quality, and evidence-informed clinical use.Identify opportunities within health professions education to strengthen herbal medicine training through innovative curricular development and experiential learning.

Are you struggling to find ways to feel lighter and have more joy in the moment? Think about the last time you had a big belly laugh and how you felt afterwards. Laughter has a powerful and immediate effect on our mind, body, emotions, and spirit! The key is that laughter is always in the moment, like the breath, and we can learn to use it as a skill.

Laughter Yoga was founded in 1995 by Indian physician, Dr. Madan Kataria. He had an interesting insight while doing research about humor and laughter. Our bodies get similar benefits whether it’s a spontaneous laugh or simulated laughter. He realized that jokes or comedy are not necessary to laugh and that we all have the innate ability to “laugh for no reason!"

In this class, we don’t tell jokes or rely on humor or comedy, just classical exercises that encourage laughter, deep breathing, stretching, and clapping. The laughter exercises help facilitate a gentle deepening of mindful awareness and an easy connection with other class members. Plus laughter is very contagious!

What are the benefits? Our exercises use laughter as an “in the moment skill” and can:

Increase blood flow and oxygen to all the major organsEnhance endorphin levels which make us feel uplifted and reduce painStimulate the immune, digestive, and cardiac systemsReduce stress levels and boost our emotional well-beingHelp build resilienceRelax, strengthen, and lengthen the muscles with stretchingHelp create a laughing community and strong social connectionEvery Thursday, 6:00-6:45 p.m. PT on Zoom

Yuri Cartier, MPH

Senior Research Associate Yuri Cartier from the Social Interventions Research Evaluation Network (SIREN) will lead this interactive session. After a brief overview of a set of recommendations the SIREN team developed for the field of social care research, participants will be invited to engage with the principles and recommendations for your own work, whether that’s a research study, QI initiative, or student project. This structured individual process will be followed by small-group discussion to share what emerged from the process and how to take concrete and consistent action in a hostile context.

Yuri Cartier, MPH, is a Senior Research Associate at the Social Interventions Research & Evaluation Network (SIREN) at UCSF. She carries out research and dissemination activities focused on the integration of social care into health care, and is particularly passionate about deepening lived experience engagement in research and anti-racist research methods. Previously, she led scientific activities at the International Union for Health Promotion & Education. Yuri lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and is an avid admirer of other people’s dogs.

The Osher Center for Integrative Health hosts monthly research seminars that are open to the research and clinical community at large. Seminars are held from September to June and are generally virtual. Presentations cover a wide range of topics relating to integrative health, many with a focus on integrative health equity.

Research Seminars are organized by Osher research faculty, Ariana Thompson-Lastad, PhD. Please contact Julia Wu (julia.wu@ucsf.edu) with any questions.

PT on Zoom

8-week online course

Orientation: June 2Class Dates: June 9–July 28Retreat: Saturday, July 18Instructor: Nichole ProffittRegister here

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week program that introduces mindfulness practices in the form of sitting meditation, body awareness, and mindful movement, modeled by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD.

This program can help if stress is having a negative impact on your life, if you are experiencing chronic physical or mental distress, or if you are simply interested in learning ways to maintain health and well-being. Over 6,000 research papers have published findings on the benefits of practicing MBSR including decreased anxiety, depression, pain, and distress, and increased attention, concentration, performance, and quality of life. Recent studies have found that an 8-week MBSR course had comparable effectiveness to a first-line medication for patients with anxiety disorders (JAMA, 2022)

Each MBSR course includes:

An orientation A 30-minute private interview with the instructor before the first class, 8 weekly sessions One daylong retreat on a Saturday or Sunday A unique and essential aspect of the UCSF Osher Center MBSR program is a thirty-minute private interview with the instructor before the first class. This is an opportunity to ask questions about the program’s suitability for any personal circumstances. One may also provide information about their health, challenges, and aspirations that one would like the instructor to know so that they can best support one’s well-being.

The orientation session consists of meeting the instructor and participants, an introduction to what participation in the class entails, history and research on the MBSR model, and instruction and practice of mindfulness techniques.

An Integrative Exploration of Qigong and Laughter Yoga
5-week online course

What becomes possible when gentle movement, breathwork, and play are explored through an integrative health lens?

Movement and breath can be powerful pathways to presence, regulation, and connection. This 5-week online course offers an experiential introduction to two joyful and contemplative practices—qigong and laughter yoga—that support mind–body well-being. Through gentle movement, breathwork, and playful exploration, participants are invited to reconnect with their body and cultivate presence in a supportive, health-informed setting.

Qigong, often translated as “energy cultivation,” is a movement meditation rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Laughter yoga combines intentional laughter with yogic breathing to support emotional balance, stress relief, and resilience. While these practices have distinct qualities, they also complement one another in meaningful ways.

In this course, we explore qigong and laughter yoga both separately and in combination, highlighting how movement, breath, and play can work together to support balance and joy. Participants are invited to meet themselves with curiosity, kindness, and a sense of play.

No prior experience is required.
