University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

The U.S. Mpox response has drawn wisdom from other prevention and response efforts – such as HIV, STIs, and COVID-19.  As the Deputy Coordinator for the White House National Mpox response, Dr. Daskalakis will share insights on what has worked well and not as well, and how we might work toward a syndemic approach to public health.

Demetre Daskalakis, MD, MPH, Deputy Coordinator for the White House National Mpox Response. Dr. Daskalakis is an infectious disease physician who serves as the Deputy Coordinator of the White House National Mpox Response.  Prior to his appointment, Dr. Daskalakis served locally and nationally as a leader in public health as the Director for the Division of HIV Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and as Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Disease Control and Assistant Commissioner for the Bureau of HIV at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Dr. Daskalakis is recognized internationally as an expert in HIV prevention and has focused much of his career on the treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs as an activist physician with a focus on LGBTQ+ communities.  Dr. Daskalakis has extensive experience with outbreak response including serving as Incident Commander during the 2018-19 New York City Measles Outbreak and in 2020 during the COVID-19 Response while at NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  In 2021, he also served as Deputy Incident Manager of the Vaccine Task Force in CDC’s COVID-19 Response.
