DESCRIPTION:Why might a doctor take a soil ecology class\, or a farmer cons
ult with a nutritionist before deciding what to plant? The medical and agr
icultural professions rarely intersect\, despite the many known links betw
een human health and the health of our farms.\n\nJoin us online as Cyril M
anning\, editor-in-chief of UCSF Magazine\, leads a lively discussion with
Daphne Miller\, MD\, resident alum\, who will talk about her book Farmaco
logy and share how pioneers in medicine and agriculture are working togeth
er to improve our health and the health of the planet.\n\nAbout the featur
 ed author:\nDaphne Miller\, MD\, resident alum\, is a practicing family ph
ysician\, clinical professor in the UCSF Department of Family and Communit
y Medicine\, curriculum director for integrative medicine and research at
the LifeLong Medical Care Family Medicine Residency in Richmond\, Calif.\,
and the founder of Health from the Soil Up\, an initiative that harnesses
medical resources to transform the food system and promote environmental
justice. Dr. Miller is also a regular health and science contributor to th
e Washington Post and author of Farmacology\, which was the basis for the
award-winning 2016 documentary In Search of Balance. For the past two deca
des\, her work has involved exploring the connections between our ecosyste
m and our personal health. In a typical work week\, Dr. Miller spends as m
uch time with ecologists\, soil scientists\, and farmers as she does with
medical professionals.\n\nThis program is brought to you by the UCSF Offic
e of Alumni Relations and UCSF Archives.
