Gamified Digital Incentive Spirometer for Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Hospitalizations

We are developing a digital, kid-friendly gamified incentive spirometer for pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) to be used during hospitalizations. Incentive spirometry performed 10 times every two hours is a standard of care for hospitalized patients with SCD. These patients are often admitted for vaso-occlusive pain (VOP) and administered narcotics. The National Lung, Heart, Blood Institute recommends incentive spirometry in these cases to prevent acute chest syndrome (ACS). ACS is a leading case of mortality for patients during VOP admissions. Our innovation encourages patient adherence to incentive spirometry with behavioral gamification, reminders, and progress tracking.
