Much of clinical and classroom teaching takes place in small groups. A faculty member can use the skills for leading an effective discussion and encouraging active student participation in a variety of instructional formats including case studies, problem-based learning, and small group discussions. The session will begin with an introduction by the facilitator, who will describe the roles and expectations just as we would with learners in real life. A handout derived from Tools for Teaching will serve as the basis for the discussion.
During this session scholars will:
Participate in three groups and subsequent debriefings.
Interact with expert small group facilitators to address personal facilitation challenges.
Discuss and formulate successful strategies for creating, leading and guiding discussions, and for asking and responding to questions.
Practice leading a small group session during a hands-on group exercise.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Discuss the characteristics of different kinds of small groups.
List two factors for success and two pitfalls to avoid in development of new small group sessions.
Create guidelines for asking and responding to questions.
Apply small group techniques to effectively teach content currently taught in lecture format in a small group setting.
Describe solutions to challenges of small group learning both in design and group dynamics.
Set personal goals for applying the skills learned in this workshop to one's own practice setting, and review a tool designed to assess performance of new teaching skills.
