Acupuncture Research in Service Members

Jane Abanes, PhD, DNP, PMHNP-BC

 

Dr. Jane Abanes, as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), is an experienced clinician, researcher, and leader with a career spanning over two decades in various areas of nursing, including medical-surgical, critical care, psychiatry, and military healthcare. She served in the U.S. Navy for over 26 years, providing care to military personnel, federal employees, and their families both in the U.S. and abroad. Her clinical work focuses on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbances.

Dr. Abanes earned her post-masters PMHNP certification from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and she completed both a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Science at Vanderbilt University. Her research centers on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for mental health, specifically examining how treatments like acupuncture can improve outcomes for patients with mental health conditions.

Dr. Abanes is the Director of UCSF's PMHNP program and an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF’s Community Health Systems. Her research aims to integrate CAM practices into mental health care, advancing evidence-based methods to improve patient outcomes.
