Trainee Research Awards Presentation #2:
Understanding the Basis of Sex Bias in Autism Through the Investigation of Sex-Differential Gene Expression in the Brain

Speaker #2 :
Donna Werling, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences

----------

Learning objectives for presentation #1:

  • Understand the effects of sleep disturbances on cognitive decline in older adults
  • Describe the epidemiologic link between napping, sleep and risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and dementia
  • Discuss the importance of napping and sleep disturbances as a preclinical maker or modifiable risk factor of neurodegenerative diseases

Learning objectives for presentation #2:

  • Summarize current understanding of the sex-differential prevalence and risk factors for autism, including the female protective effect model
  • Understand the rationale for using a genomics approach to identify intersections between disease biology and variables of interest (e.g. sex)
  • Describe general patterns of sex-differential gene expressions in the developing human brain
  • Describe and contrast the sex-differential expression patterns of autism risk genes versus genes with dysregulated expression in the autistic brain
