Proactive and Responsive Approaches to Racial Bias in Clinical Learning

NOTE: Previous completion of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Champion Training is required before taking this workshop.

Learners encounter racial bias in the clinical learning environment from a variety of sources: the learner’s direct experience of interpersonal or institutional bias, and observation of biased patient care. These "€œmicroaggressions"€ negatively impact the clinical learning process and can trigger stereotype threat, a physiologic response to a threat in the environment. This workshop identifies activities to proactively create welcoming learning environments, as well as provide skills to identify, intervene and repair when racial bias arises.


During this workshop, participants will participate in small and large group work to:

Share experiences of racial bias in the clinical environment.
Practice proactive and restorative strategies to counteract the impact of racism and stereotype threat in clinical interactions.
Discuss barriers and opportunities to applying these strategies
Set a "€œSMART"€ goal for behavior change at the conclusion of the workshop

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Define anti-racist terminology, and describe how interpersonal and structural racism manifest in health care, both historically and currently.
Employ self-awareness in how identities and unconscious biases impact interactions with students, preceptors, and families.
Apply proactive and restorative strategies to counteract the impact of racism and stereotype threat in clinical interactions.

UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
