Navigating the Ethical Terrain of Collaborative Health Research in Developing Countries

Health research partnerships between developed and developing countries have historically been intrinsically unequal whereby “developed” collaborators set the research priorities and drive the agenda while the “developing” countries serve as “subjects” of research. Does this relationship adequately define contemporary global health research? What ethical considerations should guide the way collaborative research is conducted in low- and middle-income countries? A historical analysis of collaborative research and an examination of a contemporary example of the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3 Africa) initiative will help address these questions.

Bege Dauda, BPharm, MPH, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow in Advanced Biomedical Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Science in 2015 at the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law, Katholieke University (KU) Leuven, Belgium. His dissertation addressed the ethical aspects of biomedical research in developing countries, with an emphasis on benefit sharing in the conduct of health research. Prior to his doctoral study, Bege obtained an Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics from KU Leuven and a Master in Public Health from Umea University, Sweden. His current postdoctoral research at Penn addresses both the ethical-legal challenges, and the potential opportunities, of benefit sharing in ongoing genomics research in Africa, with a focus on the H3 Africa initiative. Dauda also has an interest in the ethics of sample sharing and transfer, as well as capacity building, regarding research in low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Dauda will give his talk at Laurel Heights and the event will be simulcasted to Room 2700, Mission Hall at Mission Bay.

The talk can also be viewed via Zoom (https://ucsf.zoom.us/j/520946839 or +1 669 900 6833 ID: 520 946 839).
