University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

The Center for Faculty Educators hosts this Medical Education Grand Rounds featuring two of our recent learners presenting their Master's Projects

Riley Brian, MD on 'Learner and Instructor Communication in Robotic Surgery.'
Communication plays a central role in the operating room, both to facilitate safe patient care and to enable learning. Robotic surgery presents new challenges to communication due to changes in the physical set up of the robotic operating room. The presenter applied discourse analysis to appraise robotic intra-operative communication and will share results that highlight the importance of reducing ambiguity. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Identify common ambiguous phenomena and describe strategies to reduce ambiguity for clear, effective learning.

Tiffany Chambers, MD - on 'This is Not for Me: BIPOC Experiences of DEI Trainings.'
Diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) efforts have become widespread across institutions of higher education, and yet best practices in design, implementation and evaluation of DEI trainings remain unclear. Moreover, concerns have been raised regarding the potential negative impact of DEI trainings. This presentation will critically examine the framework, function and value of DEI trainings by engaging the narratives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) participants. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Identify the ways in which DEI training design choices may impact BIPOC participants.
