The Center for Faculty Educators presents this Medical Education Grand Rounds on Promoting Effective Workplace Learning through the Lens of Cognitive Load Theory presented by Justin Sewell, MD, PhD, MPH and Sam Brondfield, MD, MA.
Justin Sewell, MD, PhD, MPH Dr. Sewell is a Professor of Medicine at the UCSF School of Medicine. He provides clinical care at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he specializes in caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Sewell is the Medical Director for the Gastroenterology Division at ZSFG as well as the Director for the Foundations 1 (preclerkship) Curriculum at the UCSF School of Medicine. He also pursues educational research, specifically using Cognitive Load Theory to study procedural skills training using colonoscopy as an exemplar setting. Dr. Sewell completed a PhD in Health Professions Education through a joint program between UCSF and Utrecht University, Netherlands. His thesis title was "Cognitive Load Theory: A Critical Lens for Examining Procedural Skills Training in the Health Professions (The Case of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)".
Sam Brondfield, MD, MA Dr. Brondfield is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology. His clinical focus is on the care of hospitalized patients with solid tumors as Chief of the Hospital-Based Oncology group. Dr. Brondfield attends on the solid oncology consult service and the internal medicine teaching service at Moffitt-Long Hospital, working with nurse practitioners, fellows, residents, and students. His research focuses on medical education and cognitive load in clinical trainees, as well as the teaching and learning process as trainees perform consults. He is broadly interested in figuring out the best ways for medical students, residents, and fellows to learn oncology.

About Medical Education Grand Rounds at the Center for Faculty Educators (CFE): At these hour-long sessions, participants hear about recent research in health professions education. Presenters may include advanced learners studying in CFE’s master’s and doctoral programs, UCSF faculty who conduct education research, and invited speakers who contribute outside perspectives to advance the scholarly study of health professions education. The Master's Program in Education is a collaboration between UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley School of Education. The program prepares individuals in the research methodologies needed to undertake research studies in health professions education. Students receive mentoring from faculty in the UC Berkeley, Berkeley School of Education and faculty in the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators. UCSF collaborates with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This collaboration makes possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. Successful candidates graduate with a PhD in Health Professions Education from UMC Utrecht. UCSF is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF Educational Skills Workshops and Med Ed Grand Rounds have been approved by UCSF Rehabilitative Services for up to 7 continuing education hours per year total.
