Adaptive steps in chemoresistance or metastasis can be conceptualized as cells exploring and climbing the hills of fitness landscapes, such as cell survival or invasiveness as a function of gene expression. Gábor Balazsi will discuss the role of fitness landscapes in chemoresistance and metastatic processes and provide examples of inferring such landscapes with the help of protein distribution–controlling synthetic gene circuits.
