University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

Led by:

Zane Amenhotep, MD, and Erick Hung, MD

When speaking to a large group, have you ever caught members of your audience, or even yourself, starting to nod off? Large group teaching (a.k.a. lecturing) does not have to be so sedating. This workshop provides faculty with the techniques and skills needed to organize and deliver a brief, clear lecture with an effective introduction and conclusion, one concrete learning objective and a technique to engage learners.

Advance Preparation: Participants must come prepared with a ten-minute presentation, either new or old, to deliver in front of a small group during the workshop.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe characteristics of effective lectures.
Effectively use visuals.
Apply approaches to inclusivity in teaching large groups.
Practice giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Set personal goals for applying the skills learned.

During this workshop, participants will:

explore and discuss techniques for preparing and delivering effective lectures and studies that support such approaches.
take part in a micro-teaching situation where they implement workshop suggestions (for a presentation that they have prepared in advance) and receive feedback.
