The Present and Future of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine 
Frederick (Rick) Hecht, MD

A light breakfast will be served and CME/CEU credit is available with completion of a survey.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss current practice guidelines that recommend integrative medicine therapies, such as those for low back pain, and the evidence on which they are based.
  • Describe the evidence base for mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression.
  • Name examples of where research has not supported hypothesized efficacy for supplements or vitamin therapies.

Rick Hecht is Research Director of the UCSF Osher Center, Professor of Medicine at UCSF, and Osher Foundation Endowed Chair for Research in Integrative Medicine. He is trained in internal medicine, and received training in clinical research methods during a fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at UCSF. Dr. Hecht has built a research program at the UCSF Osher Center that focuses on rigorous testing of innovative approaches to lifestyle interventions and the health effects of mind-body interventions. He is the author of over 240 peer-reviewed articles, and has been the principal investigator of 12 NIH grants. He has played a variety of leadership roles in the field of integrative medicine research, including serving as the current Chair of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health.
