The goal of this workshop is to allow healthcare educators to develop and deepen an awareness of the role identities, power, and privilege play in the learning environment. Participants will examine the effect unconscious bias, stereotype threat, imposter syndrome, and systemic inequity can have on learners. They will then apply relationship-centered communication skills to develop connection, offer support and address barriers with learners and colleagues. Lastly, they will develop an action plan for implementing the skills practiced in this workshop in their learning environment.

During this workshop, participants will:


Identify their own and learners’ barriers to optimizing an inclusive learning environment.
Practice inclusion-focused introductions and relationship-building skills that develop trust with learners.
Create a specific action plan of implementing the skills in their learning environment

 

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify common biases and barriers that impact authentic inclusion and support of learners.
Use relationship-centered communication skills to develop trust and connection with learners.
Take next steps to incorporate the workshop skills in their educational environment.
