Planners expect learners to:

1. Recognize how the role, responsibilities and clinical scope of a medical social worker are grounded in the “person in environment” philosophy.

2. Develop a broader perspective of a patient’s case to include psychosocial issues associated with structural oppression (racism, patriarchy, capitalism) or personal identity (gender identity, race, age, socioeconomic status, sexuality, immigration status, etc.) or physical/developmental limitations.

3. Identify available resources that connect patients to appropriate community/hospital support.
