“Updated Guidelines for Prevention and Management of Obesity in Children and Adolescents”

Presented by: June Tester, MD, MPH

Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland

Planners expect learners to:

1. Differentiate how the updated guidelines differ from previous guidelines in key areas (ages for evaluation and treatment, medication options, and bariatric surgery referral).

2. Identify and address social drivers of overweight and obesity in children such as food insecurity and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

3. Diagnose and manage patients with obesity using tools such as language (e.g. people-first language) and appropriate accommodation (e.g. equipment and furniture scaled for larger bodies) in a way that reduces weight bias and weight stigma.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland is accredited by the California Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
