University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

Evelyn Y. Ho, PhD, is a professor specializing in communication studies, Asian Pacific American studies, and critical diversity studies. Understanding that communication is a cultural activity and that health care systems and beliefs are deeply rooted in culture, Professor Ho's teaching and research explore the intersections of health, culture, and communication. She focuses particularly on the cultural significance and use of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in underserved communities. Dr. Ho has led grant-funded research projects examining Chinese American dietary habits, health beliefs, and communication preferences, along with patient education that combines Chinese medicine and biomedicine.

Dr. Ho is the co-editor of the Wiley International Encyclopedia of Health Communication and has formerly chaired both the Health Communication Division and the Language and Social Interaction Division of the International Communication Association (ICA). She serves on the editorial boards of Health Communication, PEC Innovations, the Journal of International & Intercultural Research, and the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research. More of her work can be found at INCguide.org.

Jane Jih, MD, MPH, MAS, is a practicing general internist and researcher in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Her research aims to reduce health disparities and promote health equity among multiethnic and linguistically diverse adults by developing and assessing innovative, patient-centered interventions. Dr. Jih's current research centers on how contextual factors such as race/ethnicity, language, culture, and health behaviors influence chronic disease self-management, especially in patients with multiple chronic conditions. She also examines how patient-provider communication about these factors can be improved and how photos can be used as tools to communicate about important contextual factors in managing chronic diseases.

The idea behind Dr. Jih's work is that photos can facilitate efficient information exchange and empower patients to share their complex lived experiences, goals, and preferences that might be otherwise difficult to express in typical clinical settings. Her innovative approach addresses unmet health-related social needs and seeks to improve communication between patients and providers in diverse communities.

Sunny Pak, MD, MPH, serves as the Associate Medical Director for the On Lok PACE Powell Center and On Lok PACE at IOA in San Francisco, where his own mother is a participant. He is board-certified in family medicine and brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to his role in caring for older adults in the community. Before joining On Lok, Dr. Pak served as the Acting Medical Director at the Chinatown Public Health Center of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, where he gained extensive experience serving diverse, multilingual populations.

Dr. Pak's clinical focus centers on comprehensive geriatric care and culturally responsive healthcare delivery for elderly patients and their families. His unique perspective as both a healthcare provider and family member of a PACE participant informs his approach to patient-centered care. Through his leadership at On Lok PACE, he works to ensure that older adults receive coordinated, culturally appropriate healthcare services that enable them to remain safely in their homes and communities.
