DESCRIPTION:Richard L. Nahin\, PhD\, MPH\, is the chief of the Epidemiology
  Program at NCCIH’s Division of Intramural Research. He oversees researc
 h on the prevalence\, costs\, and usage of complementary health approaches
  in the U.S.\, managing major national health surveys. Dr. Nahin earned hi
 s degrees in psychology and neuroscience from UCLA and an M.P.H. in epidem
 iology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. \n\n
 Beginning his NIH career in 1985\, Dr. Nahin advanced from a postdoctoral 
 research fellow to senior staff fellow by 1991. He transitioned to a scien
 tific review administrator at the National Center for Research Resources b
 efore joining NCCIH in 1996. Over the years\, he has held various key posi
 tions\, including director of the Division of Extramural Research and Trai
 ning and senior advisor for Scientific Coordination and Outreach. He recei
 ved three NIH Director’s Awards for his significant contributions to NIH
  and has authored numerous scientific publications. \n\nAt the end of this
  activity\, learners will be able to:   \n\nDescribe the basic component
 s of Complementary Health Approaches\, including who uses them\, what they
  involve\, when they are used\, and where they are typically practiced. Di
 scuss how individuals assess the monetary value that individuals place on 
 Complementary Health Approaches and how this value may vary based on facto
 rs such as culture\, socioeconomic status\, and perceived effectiveness. I
 dentify key factors that contribute to the perceived effectiveness of sele
 cted Complementary Health Approaches.  Examine potential predictors of a
