Richard L. Nahin, PhD, MPH, is the chief of the Epidemiology Program at NCCIH’s Division of Intramural Research. He oversees research on the prevalence, costs, and usage of complementary health approaches in the U.S., managing major national health surveys. Dr. Nahin earned his degrees in psychology and neuroscience from UCLA and an M.P.H. in epidemiology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. 

Beginning his NIH career in 1985, Dr. Nahin advanced from a postdoctoral research fellow to senior staff fellow by 1991. He transitioned to a scientific review administrator at the National Center for Research Resources before joining NCCIH in 1996. Over the years, he has held various key positions, including director of the Division of Extramural Research and Training and senior advisor for Scientific Coordination and Outreach. He received three NIH Director’s Awards for his significant contributions to NIH and has authored numerous scientific publications. 

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to:   

  • Describe the basic components of Complementary Health Approaches, including who uses them, what they involve, when they are used, and where they are typically practiced. 
  • Discuss how individuals assess the monetary value that individuals place on Complementary Health Approaches and how this value may vary based on factors such as culture, socioeconomic status, and perceived effectiveness. 
  • Identify key factors that contribute to the perceived effectiveness of selected Complementary Health Approaches.  
  • Examine potential predictors of acupuncture use.
