University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

November 10th is Genetic Counselor Awareness Day. UCSF Health employs many licensed and board certified genetic counselors across many departments both in healthcare and in graduate training schools. These many genetic counselors help our patients and their families in departments prenatal, fertility, cancer/oncology, neurology, the memory and aging center, pediatrics, cardiology, laboratory science, and many others.

In honor of Genetic Counselor Awareness Day, our genetic counsling team is invite you to learn about your fellow UCSF coworkers who see patients, work in labs and make discoveries to help individuals and families better understand how their genetics can affect their health: https://bit.ly/2WLocxs #IAmAGeneticCounselor

These health care providers specialize in helping patients, their families, and their doctors receive and understand the valuable information regarding genetic risks, genetic diseases, and genetic testing. They become familiar with an individual’s personal and family history to determine whether genetic testing may be appropriate and help families find the support and resources they need along their healthcare journey.  They also ensure people understand their genetic testing results as well as the implications for not only their health but also for their family members. Genetics counselors are trained both to discuss complex health information, listen to each patient's needs and worries, and to help patients and their families become empowered and knowledgeable about the genetic concerns that brought them to their genetic counselor. Genetic counselors (GCs) work in a variety of settings both in academic medical institutions like UCSF, but also in private clinics, nonprofits, research labs, patient advocacy groups, tech startups, genetic companies, and healthcare education.

We're celebrating our team of genetic counselors' important role in patient care by sharing some of the incredible career paths GCs across the country have taken. If you haven't heard of genetic counselors before or are wanting to know more about the profession, register for the webinar link hosted by the National Society for Genetic Counselors below: https://bit.ly/2WLocxs
