Teachers and learners can both benefit from clear goals and expectations. Teachers often find themselves teaching without a good sense of what they are trying to accomplish, and consequently, struggle with planning or focusing on the interaction. Students learn in multiple settings with different teachers, all of whom can have variable expectations which are often not clear.

Clearly established goals and expectations will allow the learner to know what he or she should master, guide the teaching in planning the teaching session, and provide both teachers and learners with a basis for evaluation and feedback. After revealing ways to create a positive learning climate, this session will describe how to effectively establish, express, and negotiate goals and expectations. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • List three techniques to improve the learning climate
  • Recognize the effective establishment and expression of learner goals
  • Demonstrate the expression and negotiation of learner goals
  • Appreciate the importance of clearly establishing goals and expectations
