It is a health professions educator’s role to allow trainees to function at appropriate levels and to make progress demonstrating the competencies of their profession. Educators encourage activities that build toward the skills permitted by the license that the learner is working toward. Educators that have the opportunity to educate across professions, knowing and respecting roles and responsibilities, can afford learning among learners from different professions and maximize care for the patient. This workshop provides knowledge about these roles and gives opportunities for role play in scenarios that challenge participants to use new skills. The skills may be applicable to classroom, small group, and/or simulation educators. The goal is to raise awareness about how respecting roles within the health care team not only affects the care of the patient, but also can help establish patterns of effective practice in future health professionals.

During this session, participants will:

Use role play in simple and challenging scenarios that involve roles of all the participants in patient-centered care.
Face challenges involving professional roles in typical clinical scenarios.

By the end of this workshop (online and face-to-face instruction), participants will be able to:

Describe the roles and responsibilities of the health professionals on the team.
Develop and use activities to raise learners’ awareness and value of R&R of all health care professionals.
Demonstrate the ability to facilitate learner engagement with other professions in the provision of care.
Set personal goals for applying the skills learned in this workshop to one's own practice setting, and review a tool designed to assess performance of new teaching skills.
