Patients navigating the financial aspects of their care: preliminary approaches and next steps
Burdensome out-of-pocket financial consequences of medical care and subjective financial concerns have been increasingly recognized as a major adverse effect of chronic disease treatment with long-term health and social consequences. This talk will focus on recently completed studies using brief e-health behavioral interventions to: 1) screen for and address patient financial burden and social determinants among diabetes patients in clinical settings; and 2) prevent medical-related financial burden through improving health insurance literacy and navigation in federally qualified health centers and social service agencies in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Patel is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Behavior & Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health where she completed her M.P.H and Ph.D. Dr. Patel's research focuses on optimizing the management and prevention of common chronic diseases through a) identification of factors that influence poor behavioral and health care outcomes, and b) the development, evaluation, and translation of behavioral interventions in disparity populations. Emphases of her work include access to care, health care navigation, health-related financial toxicity, provider training, and optimizing the delivery of patient-centered care. Dr. Patel's work is primarily situated in a broad range of health care delivery settings. She is particularly interested in methods of intervention that utilize e-health technologies, and community engagement.
