Join us for an enlightening book discussion cohosted by UCSF Bioethics and the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. This event will feature a deep dive into Diane Tober’s new book, Eggonomics: The Global Market in Human Eggs and the Donors Who Supply Them.

Featuring Author:
Diane Tober, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama Department of Anthropology and Institute for Social Science Research, and affiliate of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. Dr. Tober is a renowned medical anthropologist whose work explores biocultural aspects of health, gender and sexuality, the commodification of the body, science and technology studies, bioethics, and social and reproductive justice. She has been researching egg donors’ decisions and experiences within the global market for human eggs since 2013. Her latest book, Eggonomics (Routledge 2025), illuminates the journeys of egg donors and explores the realities of the multi-billion dollar human egg industry. Eggonomics was awarded the 2024 Carol R. Ember Book Prize by the Society for Applied Anthropology.

Moderator:
Julia Brown, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the UCSF Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and an affiliate of UCSF Bioethics. Dr. Brown’s research focuses on the ethical and social implications of emergent prenatal genetic technologies. She is the author of The Clozapine Clinic: Health Agency in High-Risk Conditions (Routledge 2022).
