This workshop introduces the use of standardized patients in health professions education. Workshop leaders provide an overview of the use of standardized patients including the theory and rationale for their use and provide examples of how SPs are being used for both formative (teaching) and summative (assessment) exercises. Workshop faculty will also cover alternative uses of standardized patients including multiple mini-interviews, hybrid simulations and value-free exercises. Participants will learn the process of SP case development and identify the key elements of a standardized patient case. Participants will have the opportunity to develop an outline for a standardized patient case and receive feedback from their peers.

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

Discuss the rationale for the use of standardized patients in health professions education.
Describe the use of standardized patients in health professions education for learner skill assessment.
Explain the process for developing an SP case
Create an outline for a standardized patient case for formative (teaching) or summative (assessment) exercises
Set personal goals for applying the skills learned in this workshop to one's own practice setting, and review a tool designed to assess performance of new teaching skills.
