University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

SESSION 1 OF 2

Most of us are not trained in how to handle bias and discrimination in the learning environment. When bias occurs, we don’t feel comfortable addressing it. Learners have complained that these issues are not being addressed appropriately and that it negatively impacts their learning. As part of the UCSF School of Medicine Differences Matter initiative, the goal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion training is to increase awareness and skills for clinical teachers, staff, and others who work with our learners, so you can better address bias and discrimination when and where it happens.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • recognize bias and discrimination in the learning environment;
  • use a shared language to talk about bias and discrimination with learners;
  • implement skills to address bias and discrimination; and
  • apply practical tools for addressing bias and discrimination in your day to day teaching encounters.

During this training, participants will:

  • apply new skills in a variety of case-based scenarios in small breakout groups.
  • participate in an assessment of awareness, comfort, and confidence using the skills learned.

Technology Requirements

A laptop or desktop computer with a video camera to participate in a Zoom format.

*We have revamped the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion training to meet our need to physically distance, but still personally connect. The revamped training will still bring you the same content as the in-person training, via an online virtual format divided into 3 parts. The parts MUST be completed in order.

Pre-Work = Task #1: Videos/Reflection Task#2: Pre-Course Survey. Time: 30-40 minutes.

Session 1 via Zoom with a group of faculty and staff from cross-campus. Time: 3 hours.

Session 2 via Zoom with a group of faculty and staff from cross-campus. Time: 3 hours.

Scheduling Note: Sessions 1 and 2 are offered separately but they must be done in consecutive order. The sessions also involve a lot of interactive small group work so please fully commit to a time for both parts 1 and 2.

(Participants will receive the Pre-Work 2 weeks prior to the training and the Zoom info 2 days prior to their confirmed training).

After completing Session 2, you will be listed on the Differences Matter website as one of our DEI Champions.
