Taming the Tide: Profiles, Priorities, and Progress of Stroke Science in Africa
 

Bruce Ovbiagele, MD

Professor, Department of Neurology

Bruce Ovbiagele, MD, MSc, MAS, MBA, MLS, is a vascular neurologist and global health equity scholar. He is Professor of Neurology and Associate Dean at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Chief of Staff at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), and Founding President of the Society for Equity Neuroscience (SEQUINS). Prior to these roles, he served as Admiral Pihl Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) on several U.S. National Institutes of Health sponsored programs focused on improving stroke outcomes among disparate populations, as well as mentoring/training early career scholars. He has authored over 650 peer-reviewed articles with over 130,000 citations and edited six books. He was Chair of the International Stroke Conference (2016-2018) and founding chair of the African Stroke Organization Conference (2020-2022). Dr. Ovbiagele is an elected fellow of the International Science Council, World Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Royal College of Physicians, as well as an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
