Progress in Obstructive Lung Disease: Bedside to Bench and Back

Session moderated by Bob Wachter

Are asthma and COPD part of the same spectrum of obstructive lung disease, or are there biological differences that we can target molecularly? Why do some patients with COPD or asthma get admitted to the ICU with multiple intubations each year while others are stable on outpatient inhalers alone? At this Medicine Grand Rounds, Monica Tang and Prescott Woodruff will describe the biological basis of the heterogeneity in asthma and COPD and help us understand how recent advances in molecularly targeted therapies can help our patients breathe better.

Speakers:
Monica Tang, MD, is assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health. She cares for patients with a wide variety of allergic and immune-related conditions and her research focuses on how to improve the care of patients with asthma. Since she arrived at UCSF, she has been regarded as a go-to clinical expert for patients with severe asthma and immunological conditions.

Prescott Woodruff, MD, MPH, professor of Medicine, was recently named chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health. He previously served as the Division’s vice chief of the research. His own research program has spanned bench, translational, and clinical research, including clinical trials. His best-known work involves identification of molecular sub-phenotypes of asthma and COPD; he recently expanded this work to the study of racial disparities in the evaluation and treatment of obstructive lung disease. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and PNAS. He was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2012 and the Association of American Physicians (AAP) in 2022, two organizations that recognize the nation’s top research faculty in medicine.
