University of California San Francisco Give to UCSF

A Conversation with FDA Commissioner Robert Califf

Session moderated by Bob Wachter

For this UCSF Medicine Grand Rounds, our special guest is Dr. Robert Califf, the 25th commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a graduate of the UCSF Medicine Residency. We’ll begin by discussing Covid issues, including the bivalent vaccine and the struggles in combating misinformation. We’ll then shift to a wide array of other issues, including balancing cost and efficacy in FDA decision-making, the challenges of regulating medicines for serious illnesses like dementia, creating a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, and more.

Speaker:
Robert M. Califf, MD, was confirmed last year as the 25th Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He has spent a good portion of his career affiliated with Duke University, where he was a professor of medicine and vice chancellor for clinical and translational research, director of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, and the founding director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He has had a long and distinguished career as a physician, researcher, and leader in the fields of science and medicine.
