 ry and Beyond"\n\nCarolyn S. Calfee\, MD MAS is Professor of Medicine and A
 nesthesia at the University of California\,  San Francisco\, where she atte
 nds in the intensive care units.  She completed her undergraduate studies a
 t Yale University and medical school at University of Pennsylvania before c
 oming to UCSF for her residency\, chief residency\, and fellowship training
 \, as well as her Masters in Clinical Research.  Her primary academic focus
  is the pathogenesis and treatment of the acute respiratory distress syndro
 me (ARDS). Her areas of research interest include molecular subphenotypes o
 f ARDS and precision medicine in critical care\; the role of environmental 
 exposures including smoking\, air pollution\, and novel tobacco products in
  susceptibility to lung injury\; and novel treatments for ARDS.\n\nJeff Got
 ts\, MD/PhD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Cali
 fornia\, San Francisco\, where he is the co-director of the Medical ICU and
  attends in the Pulmonary Function Lab. He completed his undergraduate stud
 ies at the University of Texas and medical and graduate school at UCLA befo
 re coming to UCSF for his residency and fellowship training. His research i
 nterests include clinical trials in ARDS/Sepsis and basic science investiga
 tions of bacterial and viral pneumonia. Over the last 5 years he has worked
  to develop more clinically relevant animal models of pneumonia focusing on
  mechanisms of injury and recovery. Finally he has a research focus on the 
 acute pulmonary effects of tobacco products\, including the effects of e-ci
