Atrial Fibrillation in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: To Anticoagulate or Not, and With What?
The Gary Kardos Visiting Professor Lecture

Atrial fibrillation affects many patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the optimal approach to anticoagulation remains uncertain. For our annual Kardos Medical Grand Rounds, Wolfgang C. Winkelmayer, chief of the Section of Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine, will examine strategies for stroke prevention in patients with advanced CKD and atrial fibrillation, highlighting the challenges of extrapolating findings from the general population. The lecture will review emerging data and practical considerations to help clinicians navigate anticoagulation decisions in this complex and high-risk population.

This lecture is held in memory of Gary Kardos, an esteemed UCSF clinician-educator and nephrologist who served the institution for several decades.

Speaker:
Wolfgang C. Winkelmayer, MD, MPH, ScD, is the Gordon A. Cain Chair in Nephrology, a professor of medicine, and chief of the Section of Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine. He previously served as director of clinical research in the Division of Nephrology at Stanford University and as a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Winkelmayer is a former co-chair of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), served as an associate editor of JAMA for 15 years, and is the incoming editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
