Coleen S. Sabatini, MD, MPH Intersection of Public Health and Orthopedics: Injection Injury in Ugandan Children

Dr Sabatini is working in Uganda, seeking to identify the prevalence of injection injury in children and the resultant orthopaedic complications (postinjection paralysis and gluteal fibrosis which cause acquired equinovarus foot deformity and significant hip contractures respectively). Anecdotally, there is a significant number in some regions. The goal is to identify modifiable risk factors, to assess outcomes of different surgical interventions, to develop strategies for prevention, and advocate for education and policy changes to prevent future iatrogenic injury to children.

Coleen S. Sabatini, is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at UCSF with a clinical emphasis on trauma and lower extremity deformity, particularly clubfoot. She serves as Medical Director and Chief of Orthopaedics at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

Please join the 5th annual Global Pediatrics lecture series in welcoming Dr Sabatini.
