https://www.eventbrite.com/e/author-talk-on-muscle-the-stuff-that-moves-us-and-why-it-matters-tickets-1234990342359?aff=oddtdtcreatorJoin us for a lively conversation with bestselling author Bonnie Tsui and UCSF faculty members Amber Fitzsimmons, PT, MS, DPTSc, Barbie Klein, PhD, Madeleine Norris, PhD, MSc, and Dana Rohde, PhD as they explore the fascinating world of muscle, uncover insights on the "ideal" physique, and discuss how these standards continue to evolve over time.
In her just-released book, On MUSCLE: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters, Tsui investigates the science, culture, and personal significance of muscle—what it is, what it does, and what it means to us. Blending immersive reporting, cultural insights, and storytelling, she crafts an ode to the muscles that power our hearts, push food through our intestines, move blood through our vessels, and allow us to run, jump, and dance.
To research this book, Tsui visited the UCSF Anatomy Learning Center with Dr. Fitzsimmons as her guide, uncovering how the visual perception of muscle shapes cultural ideas of power, strength, and beauty. Through the dissection of human cadavers, they explored the inner workings of muscle, and Tsui gained a profound appreciation for how muscles function.
