Promoting Culturally Competent Patient-Centered Care in the VA: Findings from Mental Health Provider Focus Groups

Learning objectives

  • Gain an understanding of common challenges that mental health providers may experience when exploring the socio-cultural identities of their patients
  • Discuss themes that emerged from interdisciplinary staff focus groups regarding provision of culturally competent care
  • Learn skills to help patients feel comfortable discussing various aspects of their socio-cultural identities in mental health treatment
  • Learn about the DSM-5 Cultural Formation interview as a tool for clinical assessment and case formulation
