Yun-Kwok Wing, MBChB(Hons), FRCPsych(UK), MRCP(UK), FHKAM (Psych), FHKCPsych
Professor Wing is the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychiatry and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also the Director of the Li Chiu Kong Family Sleep Assessment Unit of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research integrates clinical psychiatry, general medicine, pediatrics, public health, neuropsychiatry, and digital–AI approaches to better understand sleep-related and mental conditions and their impact on well-being. He and his team have established comprehensive epidemiological data on sleep pattern and disorders in Hong Kong across different age groups. A major focus of his work is insomnia and the prevention of associated mental disorders, with recent studies targeting on app-based CBT-I to prevent major depressive disorder in youth. His group has also contributed extensively to the understanding of REM sleep behavior disorder, highlighting familial aggregation, staging pathology and microbiome dysbiosis relevant to alpha-synucleinopathies.
Professor Wing is a past President of the Hong Kong Society of Sleep Medicine and a former Vice-President of the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine. Internationally, he has served on the scientific and program committees of the World Association of Sleep Medicine and the World Sleep Society (2011–2015; 2017; 2019; 2022–2025) and is currently a co-chair of the World Sleep Society Program Committee for 2027. He organized and chaired the Gordon Research Conference on Cognitive Dysfunction in Brain Diseases in Hong Kong in 2019. An accomplished grant holder, Professor Wing has secured 102 competitive grants totalling over HKD 260 million, including 56 awards in the past five years. He is the project coordinator of a Theme-based Research Scheme award (2025/26) from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (HKD 76 million) entitled “Sleep and Circadian Rhythm: Potential Window for Prevention of Mental Disorder in Adolescents,” which unites local and international experts to assess, monitor, and prevent common mental disorders through an integrated digital platform focused on sleep and circadian health. He has received the Distinguished National Award for Sleep Medicine Scientific Technological Advance from the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (2010), the Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Development of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research from the Chinese Sleep Research Society (2016), and the Teacher of the Year Award from CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine.
