A Perfect Calming: Exploring the Etiology of Declining U.S. Overdose Deaths

Justine Miner Professor of Addiction Medicine • Dept. of Family and Community Medicine • UCSF School of Medicine

Are you curious as to what is leading to the dramatic and welcome decline in overdose deaths in the U.S.? Please join us for a robust discussion on the 4th Wednesday in June (to accommodate CPDD conference travelers), where Dr. Dan Ciccarone will explore the seemingly contentious and disparate etiological theories and argue for a synergistic one: a perfect calming. If people want to read ahead, the paper is in preprint and due out formally this month.

Dan Ciccarone, MD, MPH, is the Justine Miner Professor in Addiction Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He has over 25 years of experience in multi-disciplinary research in the drugs field. "Dr. Dan" is a keen advocate of harm reduction, actively involved in reforming US drug policy and expanding the use of clinical harm reduction technologies and services, e.g., naloxone, buprenorphine, and drug checking.

The UCSF Drug Use Research Group (DURG) is a city-wide seminar attended by faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and other Bay Area investigators centering on persons who use drugs.  Started in 2005 after a friendly debate between an epidemiologist and anthropologist on the merits of quantitative versus qualitative research methods, the DURG monthly seminars provide a community platform for new and established investigators to present their work, explore research questions and methods, and to prepare for grant applications and the dissemination of findings in a supportive environment.  The seminar has been successful in cultivating new collaborations and mentorship and in sustaining an interdisciplinary and interprofessional dialogue between those engaged in basic sciences, epidemiology, clinical, and public health research.

Our meetings are not recorded or live-streamed. Please contact us if you’d like to present your work or research ideas for friendly consultation and peer review.
