About the speaker:
Damon Tweedy is a graduate of Duke Medical School and Yale Law School. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and staff physician at the Durham VA Medical Center. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Black Man in a White Coat, selected by Time magazine as on of the top 10 non-fiction books of 2015. He has published articles about race and medicine in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the Annals of Internal Medicine. His columns and op-eds have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and various other print publications. Dr. Tweedy travels frequently to speak to physicians and clinicians, healthcare companies, medical schools and teaching hospitals, and other organizations involved in health and wellness, about the impact of race on the medical profession at all levels.

Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify at least two ways that the traditional divide between physical health and mental health is detrimental to patients
• Be able to list three ways that Black patients are more likely to experience disparate mental health treatment in clinical practice
• Discuss at least two methods to improve the centering of mental health within medical education and practice
