Joshua Cohen, MD, PhD
Resident Physician
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences

Decoding Stress Susceptibility From Activity in Amygdala-Ventral Hippocampal Networks

Frances Xia, PhD
Postdoctoral Scholar
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences

Learning objectives for Dr. Cohen's talk:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the challenges to biomarker development in psychiatry
  • Identify at least one method of dimensionality reduction
  • Identify three functions of the amygdala and/or hippocampus that may be related to the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety

Learning objectives for Dr. Xia's talk:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe brain-wide responses to reward in control and stress mice
  • Describe three changes in neural activity patterns at the single-neuron and population levels in amygdala and ventral hippocampus of mice susceptible to stress
  • Describe how activation of ventral hippocampal-amygdala pathway rescued anhedonic behavior
