To bridge this gap, our laboratory is developing innovative technology platforms that facilitate genome editing and functional genetic screening both in vivo using mouse models and in primary cells. For instance, addressing the significant challenge of delivering CRISPR systems to primary cells simply, efficiently, and non-toxically, we have developed the engineered Peptide-Assisted Genome Editing (PAGE) CRISPR-Cas system. This system enables rapid, robust, and gentle editing in primary cells from healthy donors and patients, achieving 85–100% editing efficiency after just a 30-minute incubation with the PAGE system. We have further expanded the PAGE system by integrating precision genome-editing tools. In addition, to meet the need for robust and inducible functional genetic screening in in vivo mouse models of cancer, we developed a series of chemically controlled, split-engineered base editors (seBEs) with optimized sgRNA design. This approach reveals loss-of-function and dominant negative mutations, including in complex in vivo screens that distinctively elicit non-cell autonomous cancer vulnerabilities. The seBE platform provides a powerful, inducible, and highly efficient method for systematically identifying key residues in functional genomics.

Developing Risk Stratification Models for Patients with Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Marlies Wakkee, MD, PhD, Professor in dermatology, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Objectives:

1. Describe current strategies for identifying patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) at high risk of metastasis, including the strengths and limitations of existing staging systems.

2. Understand how population-based datasets and nested case–control study designs can be used to develop and validate risk prediction models for rare outcomes such as metastatic cSCC.

3. Compare traditional staging approaches with absolute risk prediction models and discuss how clinicopathological and gene-expression biomarkers can be integrated to improve risk stratification and personalized patient management.

This is a safe and welcoming place for us to authentically express ourselves, build resilience, and encourage one another to live our best lives. Our group is facilitated by peers who know what it’s like to live with a brain cancer diagnosis as a young adult.

This group is also open to non-UCSF patients. We meet on the last Thursday of each month, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm (PT).

What becomes possible when gentle movement, breathwork, and play are explored through an integrative health lens?

Movement and breath can be powerful pathways to presence, regulation, and connection. This 5-week online course offers an experiential introduction to two joyful and contemplative practices—qigong and laughter yoga—that support mind–body well-being. Through gentle movement, breathwork, and playful exploration, participants are invited to reconnect with their body and cultivate presence in a supportive, health-informed setting.

Qigong, often translated as “energy cultivation,” is a movement meditation rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Laughter yoga combines intentional laughter with yogic breathing to support emotional balance, stress relief, and resilience. While these practices have distinct qualities, they also complement one another in meaningful ways.

In this course, we explore qigong and laughter yoga both separately and in combination, highlighting how movement, breath, and play can work together to support balance and joy. Participants are invited to meet themselves with curiosity, kindness, and a sense of play.

A signed waiver is required for all first-time participants. Class will include core strength and cardio conditioning. Yoga and meditation offered the 1st Wednesdays of each month. Jordan LeBrac is a UCSF Physical Therapist. Liz Jonas is a peer who teaches yoga and strength-building.

The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

RACE to TRAIN (Racial Conversations for Everyone to Target Racism and Interrogate Norms) aims to promote conversations around racial awareness, enhance culturally responsive training, and re-think “traditional” supervision practices. The series is accredited and offers licensed psychologists 7.5 CE credits which would cover requirements for cultural diversity, social justice, and supervision.

A signed waiver is required for all first-time participants. Class will include core strength and cardio conditioning. Yoga and meditation offered the 1st Wednesdays of each month. Jordan LeBrac is a UCSF Physical Therapist. Liz Jonas is a peer who teaches yoga and strength-building.

The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

This is a safe and welcoming place for us to authentically express ourselves, build resilience, and encourage one another to live our best lives. We don’t shy away from the hard stuff, but we also make a lot of room for joy. We laugh, cry, get real, have fun, and share our lives—most importantly, we’re building community! Our group is facilitated by peers who know what it’s like to live with a brain cancer diagnosis as a young adult.

This group is also open to non-UCSF patients. We meet on the last Thursday of each month, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm (PT).

Dace has worked in a variety of industries as a young adult (hospitality, technology sales, event photography, etc). The one thing that has tied them all together is people. As a lifelong learner, he is committed to developing resilience by leaning in with curiosity and learning to embody a growth mindset no matter the circumstance. He enjoys surfing, music of every conceivable kind, and the quiet comfort of extended time with Mother Nature.

Phoebe (they/them) is a former Californian living in Seattle, Washington. Diagnosed with a grade II oligodendroglioma in 2015, they find solace, inspiration, and joy in connecting deeply with other young adults living with brain tumors. They aspire to spend most of their time whipping up something involved and delicious in the kitchen or outside, hiking and camping with their pup, Snack.

ABOUT THE SERIES
Bridging the Gap: Translational Neuroscience Seminar Series explores challenges and opportunities for advancing translational neuroscience, in a format geared to support productive and valuable discussion:

FOCUS ON TRANSLATION
These seminars bring together scientists and clinicians to focus specifically on translation in neuroscience, highlighting and discussing key scientific and technical problems; sharing innovative approaches, techniques and strategies; and shining a light on successes, lessons and opportunities.

FOSTERING CONNECTION
The series links audiences and speakers from across the Weill Neurohub-affiliated institutions (UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, University of Washington, Allen Institute) as well as industry partners Roche and Genentech, who are joined to the Weill Neurohub through the Alliance for Therapies in Neuroscience partnership.

RACE to TRAIN (Racial Conversations for Everyone to Target Racism and Interrogate Norms) aims to promote conversations around racial awareness, enhance culturally responsive training, and re-think “traditional” supervision practices. The series is accredited and offers licensed psychologists 7.5 CE credits which would cover requirements for cultural diversity, social justice, and supervision.

Grand Rounds is held monthly on Wednesdays from 7:00AM to 8:00AM PST. The purpose and educational objectives of Urology Grand Rounds are to educate practicing urologists, residents and fellows, and other health care professionals in the field of Urology. This group is open to post-treatment UCSF cancer patients.

The UCSF Core and More class includes Pilates-based mat exercises to work on core strength and stability. We use rollers, bands and body weight as tools to enhance range of motion, flexibility, balance and muscular strength. Our goal is for you to have fun and increase your ability to perform daily activities.

This class is sponsored by the UCSF Patient and Family Cancer Support Center. It is open to cancer patients regardless of where they're being treated. You don't need to be a UCSF patient to join.

Each month, Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Vice Chair for Research Andrew Krystal, MD, MS, will host a workshop for those planning to submit or in the process of submitting an NIH R01 Research Project Grant or equivalent application.

These will be informal group meetings aimed at helping participants improve the quality of their proposals and assist participants in navigating through the application process. For UCSF Neuro-oncology patients (caregivers welcome to attend). Held Wednesdays, 12pm - 1:00pm. This class is open to all those living with a brain tumor diagnosis, of all levels and abilities. A signed waiver is required for all first-time participants. Class will include core strength and cardio conditioning. Yoga and meditation offered the 1st Wednesdays of each month. Jordan LeBrac is a UCSF Physical Therapist. Liz Jonas is a peer who teaches yoga and strength-building.

The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

Session Summary

Various reports substantiate the view, held widely among diverse groups of medical educators and leaders, that understanding and applying basic science concepts is a critical aspect of physician training. However, despite the emphasis placed on integration of basic science into medical curricula, surprisingly few studies have explored how physicians use BSK in clinical learning environments, and how faculty develop the ability to teach basic science to medical students. In this presentation, Dr. Fulton will outline her doctoral work, which has aimed to construct an understanding of how basic science knowledge is used and valued by different groups in two interrelated social learning systems: the CLE, and professional development landscape for educators. She also will talk about how this understanding can be leveraged to inform curriculum design, faculty development, and medical educator identity formation, with implications for improving learning and, potentially, patient care.

Tracy Fulton, PhD, has spent more than 20 years at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she earned a PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and is now a professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics. As a grad student, while studying telomerase in yeast, she explored her love for teaching as an adult literacy tutor, an animal museum docent, a K-5 classroom helper, and a TA for dental school biochemistry. She settled on professional school education as her target path and since joining the faculty in 2000 has directed and taught in courses in the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. Tracy is now co-directing the Teaching Scholars Program and is a learner in the UCSF-University Medical Center Utrecht doctoral program in Health Professions Education, exploring how students and faculty integrate and use their knowledge in the clinical workplace, with the goal of better informing preclerkship curriculum design.

In the Bridges School of Medicine curriculum, Tracy co-directs the REGulatioN (Renal, Endocrine, GI, Nutrition) block. One of Tracy's main goals has been to transform medical biochemistry from a siloed collection of enzymes and pathways to an applied discipline focused on understanding. She worked with a team to nationally implement and study the Pathways of Human Metabolism Map, a visual tool for health professions students demonstrated to promote deep learning and application of classroom concepts to clinical problems. In her role as a course director she is passionate about helping students see connections between biochemistry and other disciplines and collaborates with faculty locally and nationally in this effort.

Tracy is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators, and held the Academy Chair for Excellence in Foundational Teaching for 2 terms from 2013-2023. Tracy mentors UCSF students in the PILLAR program, and students in UCSF School of Medicine’s postbaccalaureate program. Tracy is active in the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), past secretary and current member of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) committee for the Association of Biochemistry Educators (ABE), and has served on two US Medical Licensing Exam committees. For ~10 years Tracy was a leader in the Aquifer Sciences initiative, a partnership between Aquifer and the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) to design instructional tools that facilitate integration of basic sciences with clinical reasoning. Finally, Tracy was a member of the group that produced the AAMC Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Entering Residency in 2014.

About Health Professions Education Grand Rounds (HPEGR):

At these hour-long sessions, participants hear about recent research in health professions education. Presenters may include advanced learners studying in CFE’s master’s and doctoral programs, UCSF faculty who conduct education research, and invited speakers who contribute outside perspectives to advance the scholarly study of health professions education.

The Master's Program in Education is a collaboration between UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley School of Education. The program prepares individuals in the research methodologies needed to undertake research studies in health professions education. Students receive mentoring from faculty in the UC Berkeley, Berkeley School of Education and faculty in the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators.

UCSF collaborates with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This collaboration makes possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. Successful candidates graduate with a PhD in Health Professions Education from UMC Utrecht.

Phoebe (they/them) is a former Californian living in Seattle, Washington. Diagnosed with a grade II oligodendroglioma in 2015, they find solace, inspiration, and joy in connecting deeply with other young adults living with brain tumors. The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

About Health Professions Education Grand Rounds (HPEGR):

At these hour-long sessions, participants hear about recent research in health professions education. Presenters may include advanced learners studying in CFE’s master’s and doctoral programs, UCSF faculty who conduct education research, and invited speakers who contribute outside perspectives to advance the scholarly study of health professions education.

The Master's Program in Education is a collaboration between UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley School of Education. The program prepares individuals in the research methodologies needed to undertake research studies in health professions education. Students receive mentoring from faculty in the UC Berkeley, Berkeley School of Education and faculty in the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators.

UCSF collaborates with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This collaboration makes possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. Successful candidates graduate with a PhD in Health Professions Education from UMC Utrecht.

We use rollers, bands and body weight as tools to enhance range of motion, flexibility, balance and muscular strength. Our goal is for you to have fun and increase your ability to perform daily activities.

Each month, Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Vice Chair for Research Andrew Krystal, MD, MS, will host a workshop for those planning to submit or in the process of submitting an NIH R01 Research Project Grant or equivalent application.

These will be informal group meetings aimed at helping participants improve the quality of their proposals and assist participants in navigating through the application process. This is a safe and welcoming place for us to authentically express ourselves, build resilience, and encourage one another to live our best lives. We don’t shy away from the hard stuff, but we also make a lot of room for joy. We laugh, cry, get real, have fun, and share our lives—most importantly, we’re building community! Our group is facilitated by peers who know what it’s like to live with a brain cancer diagnosis as a young adult.

This group is also open to non-UCSF patients. We meet on the last Thursday of each month, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm (PT).

Dace has worked in a variety of industries as a young adult (hospitality, technology sales, event photography, etc). The one thing that has tied them all together is people. As a lifelong learner, he is committed to developing resilience by leaning in with curiosity and learning to embody a growth mindset no matter the circumstance. He enjoys surfing, music of every conceivable kind, and the quiet comfort of extended time with Mother Nature.

Phoebe (they/them) is a former Californian living in Seattle, Washington. Diagnosed with a grade II oligodendroglioma in 2015, they find solace, inspiration, and joy in connecting deeply with other young adults living with brain tumors. They aspire to spend most of their time whipping up something involved and delicious in the kitchen or outside, hiking and camping with their pup, Snack.

About Health Professions Education Grand Rounds (HPEGR):

At these hour-long sessions, participants hear about recent research in health professions education. Presenters may include advanced learners studying in CFE’s master’s and doctoral programs, UCSF faculty who conduct education research, and invited speakers who contribute outside perspectives to advance the scholarly study of health professions education.

The Master's Program in Education is a collaboration between UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley School of Education. The program prepares individuals in the research methodologies needed to undertake research studies in health professions education. Students receive mentoring from faculty in the UC Berkeley, Berkeley School of Education and faculty in the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators.

UCSF collaborates with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This collaboration makes possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. RACE to TRAIN (Racial Conversations for Everyone to Target Racism and Interrogate Norms) aims to promote conversations around racial awareness, enhance culturally responsive training, and re-think “traditional” supervision practices. The series is accredited and offers licensed psychologists 7.5 CE credits which would cover requirements for cultural diversity, social justice, and supervision.

We use rollers, bands and body weight as tools to enhance range of motion, flexibility, balance and muscular strength. Our goal is for you to have fun and increase your ability to perform daily activities.

For UCSF Neuro-oncology patients (caregivers welcome to attend). Held Wednesdays, 12pm - 1:00pm. This class is open to all those living with a brain tumor diagnosis, of all levels and abilities. A signed waiver is required for all first-time participants. Class will include core strength and cardio conditioning. Yoga and meditation offered the 1st Wednesdays of each month. Jordan LeBrac is a UCSF Physical Therapist. Liz Jonas is a peer who teaches yoga and strength-building.

The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

The course is designed for all clinicians who work in women's reproductive health, including physicians (OB, family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry), midwives, nurse practitioners, psychotherapists, and social workers among others.

Objectives

As a result of the education, I intend to:

Apply evidence-based principles of reproductive psychopharmacology to optimize medication selection, dosing, and counseling across the reproductive lifespan.Assess and identify sexual health concerns in midlife patients and integrate appropriate biopsychosocial treatment strategies into clinical care.Screen for and evaluate perinatal body image disturbances and eating disorders, and implement early, evidence-based interventions.Analyze reproductive toxicology data and incorporate risk-benefit considerations into shared decision-making with patients.Demonstrate culturally responsive approaches to perinatal mental healthcare, particularly for Asian American patients, to improve engagement and treatment outcomes.Integrate interdisciplinary and patient-centered strategies to address barriers to care, including stigma, access limitations, and system-level constraints.Modify clinical practice by incorporating updated screening tools, counseling approaches, and treatment frameworks to improve reproductive mental health outcomes.

Each month, Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Vice Chair for Research Andrew Krystal, MD, MS, will host a workshop for those planning to submit or in the process of submitting an NIH R01 Research Project Grant or equivalent application.

The UCSF Core and More class includes Pilates-based mat exercises to work on core strength and stability. We use rollers, bands and body weight as tools to enhance range of motion, flexibility, balance and muscular strength. Our goal is for you to have fun and increase your ability to perform daily activities.

This class is sponsored by the UCSF Patient and Family Cancer Support Center. It is open to cancer patients regardless of where they're being treated. You don't need to be a UCSF patient to join.

Registration is required for this class. To participate, you must undergo a pre-screening with an exercise counselor.

For UCSF Neuro-oncology patients (caregivers welcome to attend). Held Wednesdays, 12pm - 1:00pm. This class is open to all those living with a brain tumor diagnosis, of all levels and abilities. A signed waiver is required for all first-time participants. Class will include core strength and cardio conditioning. Yoga and meditation offered the 1st Wednesdays of each month. Jordan LeBrac is a UCSF Physical Therapist. Liz Jonas is a peer who teaches yoga and strength-building.

The classes will focus on balance, strength, aerobic training and flexibility training specific for brain tumor patients.

UCSF patients will receive a complimentary exercise counseling session with the instructor as part of their registration. We will be reaching out to you to schedule that session

This is a safe and welcoming place for us to authentically express ourselves, build resilience, and encourage one another to live our best lives. We don’t shy away from the hard stuff, but we also make a lot of room for joy. We laugh, cry, get real, have fun, and share our lives—most importantly, we’re building community! Our group is facilitated by peers who know what it’s like to live with a brain cancer diagnosis as a young adult.

This group is also open to non-UCSF patients. We meet on the last Thursday of each month, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm (PT).

About the Facilitators:
Dace has worked in a variety of industries as a young adult (hospitality, technology sales, event photography, etc). The one thing that has tied them all together is people. As a lifelong learner, he is committed to developing resilience by leaning in with curiosity and learning to embody a growth mindset no matter the circumstance. He enjoys surfing, music of every conceivable kind, and the quiet comfort of extended time with Mother Nature.

Phoebe (they/them) is a former Californian living in Seattle, Washington. Diagnosed with a grade II oligodendroglioma in 2015, they find solace, inspiration, and joy in connecting deeply with other young adults living with brain tumors. They aspire to spend most of their time whipping up something involved and delicious in the kitchen or outside, hiking and camping with their pup, Snack.
