The Effects of Unconscious Bias in Our Work

Sarah Schaeffer, MD, MPH  is an academic hospitalist at UCSF and Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine Residency Diversity Committee. Within the department of medicine, Dr. Schaeffer conducts seminars for residents, faculty mentors, and intern selection committee members on topics of unconscious bias, microaggressions, stereotype threat, and mentoring across differences. Dr. Schaeffer is also a faculty recipient of the Dean’s Diversity Fund Award and a member of the School of Medicine's Difference Matter action group on resident diversity. 

 

Objectives: 

Understand the concept of unconscious bias and how it may impact physicians and patients

Recognize micro aggressions in the workplace

Develop skills to reduce the impact of unconscious bias and to address micro aggressions
