Topic: Quantitative evaluation of oral feeding proficiency in high-risk newborns

Presenters: Hooman Hafezi, CEO, May & Meadow, Inc. & Barbara-Medoff Cooper, Professor of Pediatric Nursing, University of Pennsylvania

Hooman Hafezi (CEO, May & Meadow, Inc.) and Barbara-Medoff Cooper (Ruth M. Colket Professor of Pediatric Nursing, University of Pennsylvania) will present an overview of technology and clinical work behind M&M’s diagnostic device for assessing oral feeding proficiency in high-risk newborn infants. The M&M system is a handheld wireless device that measures a variety of oral and breastfeeding proficiency metrics in newborns, including the ability of high-risk infants (e.g. pre-terms, infants recovering from cardiac surgery) to transition from NG tube feeding to oral feeding. We welcome input and discussion, particularly about the benefits and pros / cons of a quantitative tool vs the current standard of care - cue-based feeding - and clinical testing strategy to support widespread adoption and ultimately shift the standard of care.

Surgical Innovations meetings provide a collaborative venue for medical device development support, problem solving, and networking among surgeons, engineers, trainees, and others interested in medical technology innovation. All UCSF personnel are welcome to attend, as well as external affiliates who have signed the Surgical Innovations Code of Conduct.
