Health Economics And Transfusion Safety

Parnassus

4:00 PM- 5:00 PM

  • Monday, July 27, 2009
Description:

Some have suggested that “blood is different,” and the role for economic analyses in blood safety is thus circumscribed. This talk will focus on how economic evidence contributes to decision making in some aspects of transfusion medicine, but not others.  Examples will be drawn from blood donation screening for Trypanosoma cruzi in the USA and other infectious agents in a set of 7 countries that vary according to the WHO Human Development Index.  The potential role of pathogen reduction technology in enhancing transfusion safety for both infectious and non-infectious threats will also be discussed.
